David McNamara is a strategist, content marketer and photographer.
He is currently Head of Planning at VCCP Kin, a specialist creative content agency and part of the VCCP Partnership, one of the UK's leading integrated creative agencies.
David is a planner that specialises in emergent digital strategy. He helps his clients take advantage of the latest trends in digital innovation and digital marketing.
David started his career in good old direct marketing as a junior agency suit back in the mid 90's. He has worked in agencies all his career in various roles, in almost every category and across nearly all disciplines. He is a self made integrated marketing practitioner.
Most recently, David was Digital Strategy Director at Iris, the global creative innovation agency where he led the digital strategy practice. Working with clients like Domino’s, Barclaycard, Mini, Shell, Diageo, Adidas and Philips he helped shape the agency's digital, content and social strategy services. During his time at iris the agency scooped many creative and strategy awards in digital marketing.
Prior to Iris David played a key role in building Jam from start up to one of the industry’s brightest digital creative agencies where he was Strategy Director. He helped lead social strategy for Sky, Samsung, Microsoft, Capital One and Renault. He also launched and led Jam's start up social business consultancy helping brands adopt a culture of social marketing operations into their organisation.
David has been a pioneer in content marketing since 2005. He is a recovering content evangelist always searching for new ways to craft extraordinary branded content.
Whilst working at Future Publishing he helped build one the UK’s top ten content marketing agencies before 'content' became a thing. Whilst at Future+ he published one of the UK's largest customer magazines, Sky Movies magazine, helped to launch BT Vision with an innovative content strategy and ran PC World's flagship content marketing program.
An accomplished agency professional with 19 years integrated marketing experience, David has a background in consulting, planning and client management. He has helped to build and lead successful agency teams in Sydney, Auckland and London, within many leading agency networks.
David’s career spans a six year journey Down Under to Australia and New Zealand working at BBDO, Wunderman and Havas agency networks. During his time there he launched Charles Schwab, grew IBM’s presence in APAC and created award winning digital campaigns for Telecom New Zealand.
Over the years David has worked within all communications disciplines, but has spent the last 10 years specialising in digital strategy, social media and content marketing. He has a real passion for pathfinding in next generation marketing helping his clients figure out how to grow their brands in a digital age.
His professional experience covers B2C, B2B and corporate communications. He has extensive experience in financial services, telecommunications, retail, CPG, automotive and IT.
A graduate of the University of East London, David studied Cultural Studies (BA) where he gained a 2:1. He also has a Post Graduate Diploma in Digital Marketing (Credit) from the Institute of Direct Marketing and has studied extensively at Cranfield University School of Management and the Account Planning Group.
David combines his professional work with his commitment as Visiting Fellow at the School of Creative Industries at the University of East London where he lectures on advertising and digital strategy.
A keen speaker and writer, David recently spoke at SXSW and ISBA. He also tries to blog regularly at Planning Notes about strategy, brands and culture in the digital age.
An enthusiastic amateur photographer David is always looking to collect another decisive moment. He particularly likes combining his passion for cultural history and street photography by documenting urban topography.
David is a proud resident of East London where he tries to live life to the full with his partner, daughter and two cats.
